EXERGY ANALYSIS OF BATCH DISTILLATION PROCESS
Batch distillation is a versatile dynamic separation method widely used for producing high-purity, low-volume, high-value products. Despite its advantages, it is energy-intensive, with significant potential for optimization through improved control strategies. This study compares conventional and optimized reflux ratio control strategies based on exergy destruction criteria. The analysis employs the exergy balance equation for a nonsteady open system in contact with constant temperature heating and cooling reservoirs. Exergy destruction was quantified for the entire system and key subsystems: reboiler, distillation column, condenser, and product receiver. Results reveal substantial reduction of exergy destruction in optimized processes compared to conventional ones. Majority of exergy is destroyed in the reboiler and condenser, due to intensive heat transfer. Interestingly, simpler control strategies in some cases achieved higher exergy efficiency than more energy efficient complex strategies, influenced by the final composition distribution within the column.

He was born on 6 March 1994 in Čakovec (Croatia), where he finished high school (Josip Slavenski Gymnasium). He graduated in 2017 from the undergraduate and in 2018 from the graduate studies of mechanical engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Zagreb (FSB). Today, he is an assistant at the FSB's Chair of Technical Thermodynamics of the Department of Thermodynamics, Thermal and Process Engineering. During his studies, he received the Faculty Medal for academic success and the 'Davorin Bazjanac' award and the awards from the companies Energetika Marketing and Elektrometal - distribucija plina.
